Critical Comments
“… But a creation of real difficulty was waiting for him, that masterwork by Debussy, “La Mer”, and he was able to
get the 94 musicians (José de San Martín National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Argentina)
playing with a high quality level… here Sabat showed good taste, a clear sense of balance and
the flexibility required by the thousand details of a score of extreme
subtlety at times and powerful strength at others. It was a successful
homage to Debussy in the centenary of his death…”

“Pablo Sabat's baton is impeccable and followed minutely by the
musicians... the orchestra (National Youth Symphony and Arequipa
Symphony combined) played Beethoven’s Ninth with a beautiful
sound impulsed by the conductor, who controlled everything to
perfection; a delight to listen... Organic sound, the baton transformed
the orchestra into a tamed monster...”

“Great concert today of the National Symphony at the Gran Teatro Nacional… excellent
premiere of Sadiel Cuentas’ Violin concerto and an exciting, colorful and brilliant Strauss’
Ein Heldenleben. Pablo Sabat excelled conducting the orchestra, as well as virtuoso Carlos
Johnson as violin soloist in both works… The orchestra worked in depth and minutely the
complexity of the work under Sabat’s guidance, offering an endless palette of nuances,
brilliance, dynamics and the appropriate instrospection… Sabat impressed energy when
needed, chose correct tempi, and perfectly controlled the balance of the orchestra
throughout the 40 minutes this work lasts.”

“Pablo, once again, a thousand thanks for your extraordinary work at the premiere of my
Violin concerto. My work was in the best hands!”
Sadiel Cuentas
Composer
“I had never enjoyed so much that work, never performed before in Guayaquil: La Mer, by
Claude Debussy. I realized, finally, that it was a work for connoisseurs of sonics… Pablo
Sabat understood well what the composer meant when he affirmed that “music should
humbly give us pleasure”. Sabat captured the essence of the piece, discreet, subtle, so close
to Monet… he conducted an orchestra that reacted notably, with beautiful interventions by
the different soloists. An audience of quality, silent, that did not interrupt with applause,
perceived the Debussy like a sensual dream where everyone could feel relaxed, rocked in an
invisible sea… Definitely a well achieved success…”

"A mature and conservative appearance; a classical and elegant approach to the keyboard.
